Wedding Hair Trends For Summer 2015

Since we covered whether or not you need a makeup artist in my last blog post, I thought it would be fun to touch on wedding hair trends we’re seeing for Summer 2015. To help me out, I contacted Hannah of Urbanista Weddings, check out what she had to say!

B. Jones Photography www.bjonesphotos.com

What hair trends are you seeing this year for weddings that are different than last year?

This year we are seeing a lot more braids, then last year, and a more understated glam. The messy, side bun is going far far away, and brides are leaning toward a more effortless look. It’s what I like to call ‘Messy on purpose’. As for makeup, we get a lot of requests for a soft, defined eye and a natural lip color, with a high demand for peachy pinks and bronzed nudes. Last year, we did a lot of really sharp eye makeup, with an emphasis on black shadow and liner.
wedding-hair-trends-summer-2015-adornmentsAre there any trends from last year that are still going strong this year?
We are still styling a lot of low updos and adding hair adornments. Texture is a huge request for the majority of hairstyles whether it’s up, down or half up. Boho makeup and hair is still amongst the favorites and of course, our specialty.

Do you have any suggestions for a bride who’s trying to determine if she should wear her hair up or down?
The very first thing we do when consulting with a Bride, is to have them create a beauty inspiration board on Pinterest. That gives us a thorough wedding-makeup-tends-bronzy-neutralsidea of what they are attracted to. The next things we want to know is what the dress looks like, the colors of her bouquet and the location of her wedding. All of those details will help decide what her style is. The final thing we determine is her face shape, hair texture and length, and if she is comfortable with having her hair up or down. Some Brides have a tendency to fiddle with their hair a lot, which could cause the style to relax a bit. There are so many factors that go into planning a hairstyle, which is why we recommend having a trial run before hand.

Jenna Bechtholt Photography

One of the biggest decisions to be made during the wedding planning process surrounds the photographer. Lucky for you, we have had the pleasure of getting to know Jenna Bechtholt this wedding season. Newly relocated from Los Angeles, she is a fresh pair of eyes for our Seattle area and she might be exactly the photographer you are looking for. She produces spectacular work while maintaining such a cool and calm air about her. Let’s be honest- she’s the type of photographer you just want to go to coffee and hang out with, even after all the wedding checks have been signed and deposited…yeah she’s that good😉 Take a peak at the interview we had together and then follow the link at the end of the interview to view her full website!

Have a happy weekend xo

How did you get into photography?

I have always loved photography. There is something so honest and wonderful about being able to freeze a moment in time. Growing up I would carry around a disposable camera with me and document my friends, the places that I went and things that I wanted to remember. Looking back at those photos now I am so glad that I did because those little memories mean so much to me now! I ended up graduating from college and was on my way to graduate school when I decided I was tired of reading about abstract thoughts and people doing things — I wanted to be the one doing things! The creative side of me was really egging me on to get back into photography. I ended up falling in love with weddings and the rest is history.

How would you describe your photography style?

I like to take a simple and relaxed approach to photographing weddings as well as lifestyle sessions. I’m not there to direct and create perfectly staged pictures, rather I choose to document the day as it naturally unfolds and capture the special moments and details present. I would also say that I specialize in natural light photography meaning that I prefer to use the light of the day when photographing my couples! In my opinion, natural light is the best way to give images a bright and dreamy aesthetic, which is the look and feel I aim to achieve, and when you add a bit of romance to that combination you get a stunning end result!

What’s your favorite part about being a wedding photographer?

The best part of my job is getting the chance to meet so many happy couples and learn all about their unique relationship — how they met, where they fell in love, how he popped the question, and the list goes on. I particularly love that these people start off as strangers and quickly become my friends and that they allow me to be apart of such a special time in their lives.

Why You Should Hire A Makeup Artist

Continuing with the Do You Need A… series that started with Do You Need A First Look, we’re going to continue with Do You Need A Makeup Artist.
One of the things brides seem to wonder is whether or not they should hire a professional makeup artist. While we understand that it may not be in everyone’s budget, or something that you’re kind of on the fence about, we thought we’d feature one make artist’s opinion. And she was very willing to answer the questions I sent her way. Take it away Erin!
***
0014Why should brides hire a professional?
When it comes to wedding Hair & Makeup you should ALWAYS hire a professional!!!  I hear all the time..”My friend is going to do it”  Ladies, unless your friend is a professional or well trained artist, you are making a mistake.  Friends back out, you can’t tell them you hate their work and do it over.  Friends do not have the experience in long-lasting wedding day makeup and the curve balls that get thrown into a wedding day.  Brides spend thousands of dollars on a gorgeous gown but are not willing to spend a few hundred on their face!! THEIR FACE!!!  Of all things to skimp on, please don’t let it be your face. A professional knows the delicate balance between wedding day makeup and camera ready makeup.  (Trust me there is a big difference between everyday, night, camera, going out, and wedding day hair and makeup.)
What can you expect out of a professional makeup artist?
A professional knows how to schedule your day so you do not run 1-2 hours late.  They have the access to assistants so your entire bridal party can benefit from beautiful H&M, and not be left to their own scattered styles.  I schedule everyone on the “45’s” meaning each service, Hair takes 45 minutes, Makeup takes 45 minutes.  My Brides get usually 1 hour 45 or 2 depending on style and I like to give them some extra love.  This allows a little wiggle room for everyone just in case ladies get stuck in traffic, are on the phone with a lost bridal party member, hung over and running late🙂 or in case someone decided last minute they would like a service.  This happens all the time!
Are makeup trials that necessary?
I highly recommend a trial pre-wedding.  This is not a requirement but if you have the budget, incredibly valuable.  This gives you the opportunity to meet with your artist and determine a multitude of important factors.   Do you like the artist and will they be a good fit with your style and personality?  Your wedding day should be fun, joyous, calm, and a time to spend those few hours enjoying your family and friends leading up to your big very busy, moments.  If your artist is rude, arrogant, does not understand you and your vision, this will do none but create an awkward and uncomfortable environment.
k53The Trial will also give you the opportunity to see if the style you have in mind is truly the right style for your hair and skin.  Many many brides come in with Pinterest pictures of gorgeous looks but when they get that look, the jaw dropping vision is not what they had in mind at all and looks terrible on them personally.  Let’s be real…Kim K is a stunner, but not necessarily the look you may want on your vintage or bohemian wedding, not to mention… she wears a ton ton ton ton ton of makeup with lots of additions to her hair and face. Photoshoots and magazine covers are styled and set to the perfect moment, your wedding will not be sitting in one place in front of a camera with a H&M artist touching you up every 3 minutes for the perfect shot.  You need to move, dance, hug, kiss, and all around look “real” while still pulling off that gorgeous “natural” glow. Lastly this trial will give you and your artist a step ahead on wedding day.  We can prep to your exact needs, know if you had any allergic reactions, positive or negative preferences, and adjust our products to your specific wishes.  Wedding day goes smoother and faster with a trial.
What should brides do ahead of time to get themselves ready?
I always advise a daily moisturizer routine prior to wedding for as long you can.  Facials are wonderful a week prior, no less than a week in case you have a reaction.  No chemical peels, crazy out of ordinary waxing, cutting, or plumping the week of the wedding.  Do all of these at least a week out to 00026make sure you know the outcome and like the results. Drink lots of water the week of the wedding, and please please please do not go overboard on the alcohol the night before the wedding!  I know you want to live it up, family and friends are there, it is so exciting all the planning is done, wedding is here…But..what you get when you drink too much is dehydrated and ashy..yes  GREY.  That will ruin everything we have worked up to and force us to change our products in order to color correct your face.  You just don’t look like that glowing beautiful bride that you would have if you could have just stayed in moderation.
In conclusion🙂  Brides need to realize they are hiring a “professional” this is our business, not just someone who has some makeup and hair products and likes to do it here and there.  We pay taxes, rent on our spaces, buy tons of products, take classes to continue to excel in our craft,  spend money on advertising, pay our assistants, babysitters so we can work, spend hours replying to your emails, creating schedules, prepping for your event, etc.  I can not stress enough it is not “just makeup” its our business and our passion.  This is why we cost what we do!!! Don’t want to spend the money? NO problem, go to a counter or get someone just starting out I completely understand you need to stay within a budget. Remember this is your wedding day, these pictures will be in your house, parents house, FB, instagram FOREVER, wouldn’t you want the best possible H&M you could get?  You don’t need to break the bank, but understand it should cost money this is your face and hair we are talking about, everyone will be looking at it including you.

Wedding Trends

Alyssa Hoffman Events2015 has already been an incredible year for the wedding world. Brides are diving into their individuality and really pushing for their unique styles to shine through to each guest at their wedding. This makes wedding trends exciting, because there really aren’t any rules! Before we share some of our favorite 2015 styles however, we wanted to make note that “the color experts at Pantone… named Marsala — a ‘naturally robust and earthy wine red’ — the color of the year for 2015. ” (bridalguide.com) So here is your challenge! How can you incorporate the versatile Marsala into your wedding plans? Check out our brides below and notice the subtle hints of marsala, or imagine where they could be.

Alyssa Hoffman Events

The Organic Bride- one of my personal favorites is the organic bride. This bride tends to be softer in her color choices- using lots of off whites, muted greens and other neutrals. This bride generally will emphasize her florals and fill her wedding with greenery. (psst- there’s a little marsala peaking through in her flower crown)

The Royal Bride- this 2015 bride takes a new twist on sophistication and class. We have found that our brides that lean more toward the “high class” look are also loving the trendy florals and table scapes. This leaves us with a lovely combination of royal colors (ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blues) and often outdoor organics. (Check out the marsala in her bouquet!)

Happy planning lovelies! And don’t forget to let your unique style shine through at your wedding! xo Heather

Do you need a “First Look”?

Breaking traditional trends, the concept of a “first look” is becoming significantly more and more popular in today’s wedding scene. The idea behind a first look is to provide a private moment before the ceremony for the groom to see his bride. This is certainly a generational trend, but there are plenty of reasons why it is beneficial and often preferred. So I thought it might be helpful to share some of those with you-

  • Your photographer/videographer will LOVE you. Having a first look will free up so much of your day to take pictures. Without a first look your picture time is condensed to your cocktail hour and maybeee a couple pictures during reception if you manage to sneak away from your guests (not likely). This can make your pictures feel rushed and potentially incomplete if anything goes wrong.
  • You get to spend more time with your soon-to-be spouse on your wedding day! So many people have said that the wedding goes by in such a blur and you don’t even get to spend most of it with the one you’re marrying! A first look gives you that opportunity to spend the day together AND have the emotional moment of seeing each other for the first time.
  • A first look can ease your nerves. The anticipation of your wedding day can be stressful enough without the pressure of waiting for the big reveal down the aisle.
  • For those grooms who have always envisioned seeing their blushing bride for the first time walking down the aisle, don’t fear! Almost every groom that we ask says that seeing their lady in white for the first time prior to the ceremony doesn’t change their emotion of seeing her walk down the aisle. Most tell us that it is in fact a completely different feeling!

Like I said, first looks are becoming more and more popular, and hopefully I was able to explain what makes this trend desirable!  Check out some of our couples big first look moment along with the creative idea that Marissa used to prolong the “viewing” process for Connor! Happy planning! xo Heather

Camille + Steve – Real Seattle Wedding – The Cove at Normandy Park

Camille and Steve’s wedding day completely showcased who they are as a couple, it was clean, classic, modern and above all a party. All of the things they told me they were looking for at our initial consultation came to life. Designing this wedding and getting to know Camille and Steve was so much fun, it was something different then what we are used to but we loved every aspect of the design. The simple white and black wedding design looked so fresh, and modern against the natural backdrop of The Cove at Normandy Park.

A few of my favorite details form this wedding are the DIY wax paper backdrop from Style Me Pretty and the choice of black linens. We transitioned the backdrop from the ceremony to the reception in order to create a unique installation that hung above the tables and acted as a chandelier of sorts. The Black linens and chairs from Grand Event Rentals really allowed the venue to have a grounded feel with all of the light colored brick, wood floors, and white floral selections by Bash and Bloom. Check out the rest of the details and let us know what you think!
